I think a lot of us are familiar with Sakuma DROPS (サクマ式ドロップス), a popular classic Japanese candy packaged in a rectangular tin can with tin pull cap. It made an appearance in Studio Ghibli’s Grave of the Fireflies (火垂るの墓 Hotaru no Haka) and since then it’s popularity among Western audiences has greatly increased. But did you know that the standard fruit flavours are not the only drops available in those rectangular tin cans? Infact, these tin cans are very popular as a collectors item, for their designs and their long history (Sakuma Drops have been around for over 100 years!)
As a way to draw attention and satisfy tourists, many of Japan’s prefectures have released special edition DROPS in a unique local flavour through (company name). Much like the original Sakuma Drops, these totally bizarre, sometimes crazy flavour candies are starting to gain popularity among those in the know! That’s why starting this weekend, we’ll start going through each prefecture’s specialty drops, starting with Hokkaido!
